Born in Glen Ridge, N.J., David was a graduate of Bloomfield (N.J.) High School, Class of 1956, and Bloomfield College, Class of 1961, where he double majored in chemistry and mathematics. He continued his graduate studies at the University of San Francisco, earning a master's degree in toxicology.
David spent most of his career as the corporate director of toxicology and preventative medicine for Merck and Co., Inc., in Rahway, N.J. As a result of his work, a standard was set to protect employees from chemical exposure, a standard which was adopted by most pharmaceutical companies across the globe.
David loved the outdoors. Upon retirement, he founded the Twin and Walker Creeks Watershed Conservancy, which ensured creeks and lakes in Pike County, Pa., remained pristine. He and his wife built a home there, where he enjoyed fishing, traveling and woodworking.
In addition to his wife, Leanne, David is survived by his son, Scott Kirk of Edison, N.J.; daughter, Bonnie Kirk of Carlisle, Pa., and son, Douglas Kirk of Ridgefield Park, N.J. Also surviving is his brother, Greg Kirk of Wall Township, N.J. David was predeceased by his parents, Helen and George Kirk, and his brother, Richard D. Kirk.
